How do DMV Points Work?

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) point system is designed to monitor and assess the driving records of licensed drivers in the state. When a driver commits a traffic violation, they may be assessed one or more points on their driving record. The number of points assessed depends on the severity of the violation. Some violations, like VC 22450 failing to stop at a stop sign will carry one point. Other more serious violations, like VC 22348(b) speed in excess of 100mph, will carry 2 points.

A driver can accumulate up to 4 points within 12 months, 6 points within 24 months, and 8 points within 36 months before their license is suspended. The length of time that points remain on a driver’s record varies, but typically they remain for three to seven years.

One way to mitigate the impact of points on a driver’s record is to attend traffic school. When a driver successfully completes a traffic school program, the point associated with their traffic violation will be masked from insurance companies and the DMV. This can help to prevent increased insurance rates and keep a driver’s license from being suspended. It should be noted that not all charges are eligible for traffic school.
